Mmm... I love that Michael Buble song. It's so soothing.. It's one of those song where you can just lie in bed and fall asleep to. It's one of those songs where you can just sit by the window and look out as the rain trickles down the glass pane.
Now I just have no thoughts at all. All I can picture is a steaming cup of capuccino and hazy salmon pink and gold images of the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I can picture rain.
I want to go to Edwards garden and have a picnic. That has always been a dream since I was a child. Being able to sit underneath a large oak tree, dappled light across the blanket of dewy grass. A red and white checkered linen cloth laid with a wicker basket, looking across from the lazy river. Ducks bathing and floating slowly in the water, the elderly ladies in their flamboyant sunhats feed pieces of bread to the cackling geese. A lone elegant swan dressed in its white finery, preening behind the long lithe heather.
I wish I was a little kid again. I used to think being a prostitute was the easiest job ever. After watching Les Miserables I asked my mom what that was. She told me that it was someone who slept with men. And I was thinking wow what an easy job. Just go from house to house and sleeping in a comfy bed next to a person! Yeah, I used to think two people sleeping next to each other like logs. :P
The other day I was waiting for Robyn to pay for her purchases and I saw these two little girls.. about twelve and they were decked out in the typical brand name tracksuits with Uggs and carried purses. And I think that is just so completely wrong. Why can't little girls stay as little girls.. We've eliminated make believe games for video games. Children cannot discover and exercise what imagination they have. I used to get all these random toys and trinkets and play with them... I used to love the plastic foods and serve them to my parents.... until the grand ate of 13. Instead of 'dress up' which I used to love to do with my cousins' clothes.. we'd put on these dresses and parade around... we now have girls with Dooney and Bourke purses who get manicures, have their own Ipods and all sport a pair of Uggs. Whatever happened to creativity, imagination and individuality? What happened to those beautiful picture books? And simple dolls? What happened to stickers? I remember my mom told me that she was handing out packs of Real Fruit gummies and one kid said "this is so cheap". Now, mom mom says, kids don't like stickers. She now buys sparkly little keychain diaries and some little building kits for the kids. How spoiled they are. I used to love stickers. I still have my sticker collection and it brings back memories.. I remember trading this one for that one... and I got those cuz I thought they were cool.... And I have a collection of beautiful picture books. Remember when Scholastic used to publish books brimming with colorful images? Now they sell 'Sleepover Kits and Book!' and 'Mary Kate and Ashley Go to Prom!'. They always have to have some kinda item to lure kids to read or some celebrity. Now they never publish beautiful books. And if they do, they're all hardcover.
Why do little girls need purses anyway? Moreover, semi luxury purses that cost over $100? Why the need to get Uggs and Triple Five Soul hoodies and matching trackpants? Have you seen Jacob Jr? The stuff is freakishly the exact same stuff they produce in Jacob, just a smaller version. Did I tell you I hate Uggs. They remind me of insect heads from 'A Bug's Life' and they make your feet a lot larger than they really are. I got my first purse in Grade 3. Yes that's really young but it was this one Auntie Joanna got for me for christmas.. a velvet sling on, studded with multicolour rhinestones and iridiscent beads. It looks nothing like the ones they have now. It was just a play thing that I took to church because it was sparkly.
They're growing up younger and younger. Nothing will impress them when they turn 18. Nothing will fulfill them. They've been through the Ipods, the gadgets and gizmos, the brand name trends, the $200 purses (this is no joke.. in new york, pre-teens everywhere are clutching these $200 bags).. so what can they do? They will aim for higher. Cookie cutter fashionistas decked in head to toe Louis Vuitton, Narciso Rodriguez, Ralph Lauren and Yves Saint Laurent with platinum blond hair and orange-tanning bed skin. *shudder*
I guess that's what my anti-painting was all about. Youth growing up too quickly. Wanting the respect and security from more sophisticated adults.
I've always wondered how my artistic skills have developed from the past to present. Picture books have played a great part in the development and inspiration of that. I'd read some of them over and over again tirelessly. I'd copy certain parts of the picture. I'd get inspired by the stories and try writing my own. Another big influence when I was in grade school were disney stories especially about princesses (if you haven't figured it out by now) and I used to listen to this Sleeping Beauty tape and draw pictures of Sleeping Beauty in her castle with presents and cake (she had no nose and fingers at the time) on the back of the church paper. When I went to Hong Kong, my art abilities were strongly influenced by Archie comics. I used to copy Betty and Veronica and try making up my own (they looked mutated) characters. I used to copy them and colour them in and my mom would laminate them. The lady at the shop used to admire them. I remember when I was short in money I used to get commissions and sell my artwork for $1-$5 HK for my parents. I also took lessons but they put more emphasis on creativity over technique.
Then my talent took a huge leap forward (wow it sounds like evolution or Mao's ideologies). During one summer I was visiting Canada, my cousin took me to her art teacher's place and I was so impressed so I started to learn how to sketch. I copied many basic pictures of flowers and then advanced to eggs, cars (I hated doing that cuz they have to look like they can function if built), and eventually learned how to do watercolour.
When I moved back I switched teachers twice and improved my watercolour skills and sketching skills. This was when I learned really how to draw from life rather copying from books. When I went to Arts York, I learned life drawing and anatomy and acrylic painting.
And this is how I got to where I am today. I remember my earliest drawing.. a 'scribble gesture' of my family in a multitude of colours... shapeless forms with smiley heads. And my latest works... the tribute to the Beslan tragedy, my colour pencil study of different objects...
I remember when I first started with my art teacher in Canada, I used to think "wow I wish I could do that!" and now I can. Which is quite odd actually. I wonder if I was ever to be able to show some of my latest works to that 12 year old girl I used to be, what would I have thought? I remember my art teacher photocopying one of my works because he was so impressed with the realism in my waterdrops on a rose. He said they looked so real and I have to agree with him because I captured the light perfectly.
Yes so that my history of the life as an artist. Unlike people who take chemistry, physics and calculus, I have been cultivating this talent for years. It doesn't come naturally, I sat in art class for hours trying to show the roundness in the porcelain cup using different tones. People always see the end product but they never care to glance at the progression that got a person where she is today. Yup, I wish I could find all my old drawings and make a chart to see how I have progressed. That would be really cool.
