Your Love is All We Ever Need
I feel myself becoming more and more closed off to people.
"Sam I have to come to New York"
uh okay no one's stopping you
"... but I need a place to stay"
I hate it when people use you. Well duh everyone hates that but it's comes to the point where I'm thinking "whoa did you just demand me to do something as if you deserve it?"
My classmate once said for her thesis project, people cannot freely give because they have never known love without payment. So how do you design something that will encourage generosity without strings attached?
Without Christ, you can't.
The difference between us and the non christian is that we have experienced love freely given, grace bestowed upon us without fine print.
I've been meditating on this song today (we're doing body worship to this song on Praise Night in a few weeks):
Phil Wickham: Jesus Lord of Heaven
It's a beautiful song- I encourage you to listen to it.
Your love is deeper than any ocean
Higher than the heavens
Reaches beyond the stars in the sky
Your love is deep, Your love is wide
Your love is great, Your love is high
Your love is all we ever need
Your love is all we ever need
Contrary to popular christian belief that worship is only emotionally engaging while the mind is unfruitful save reading the lyrics as they are being sung, I realized today, while our group was making up dance moves, I don't fully grasp total dependency on God's love.
Your love is all we ever need.
I don't. I'm constantly looking for that fulfillment in other things:
To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?" says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, ntot one of them is missing. Isaiah 40:25-26
During SALT, my aunt said that we struggle with the same sins over and over again. I took comfort in knowing that I was not the only one who was struggling with the same sins continually. When people say "still?" when I share with them my struggles, I feel like I ought to have moved on to other problems or something. But we are all chained to the same issues- only to realize we are a lot weaker than we think and in Christ we cannot overcome them.
Last night over pad thai, my friend and I were able to take time to just catch up after not having seen each other for a month. We found out last year that we were both struggling with the same issues pertaining to dating and it really helped to have someone who was also going through the same thing, understand one another. As I was talking it occured to me to list out the reasons for wanting a significant other:
Reasons for Dating
1) To be loved (therefore to feel wanted)
2) To have someone around in times of loneliness
3) To be able to depend on someone (unlike friends where there is no commitment)
If I am in pursuit of dating for the reasons above, then it is clear I realized only friggin last night, that I was looking in all the wrong places.
For God has called each one of us to find love in Him
Surely it was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish. In your love you kept me from the pit of destruction; you have put all my sins behind your back. Isaiah 38:17
To fill loneliness with Him
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand Isaiah 41:10
To fully depend on Him
Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternalIsaiah 26:4
I'm currently reading 'Desiring God' by John Piper- to find delight in God thus Man's desire to be happy fulfilled in taking pleasure in Christ.
Someone once told me that the happiest people on earth are the ones who give.
That person obviously has not given enough.
I was praying for God to show me a glimpse of His glory, to find delight in Him thus finding happiness as a mere mortal strengthened by the power of Christ. Also for the Holy Spirit to intercede and ask for things that display God's power beyond "God give me friends" or "God help me on my test."
I watched 'He's Just Not That Into You' with my aunt yesterday morning. It reminds me of 'When Harry Met Sally' type of movie- full of discussion how guys think differently from girls etc. The movie is basically about how women always think things that are obviously not true and how they always read too much into things. The idea of the movie hinges on this one age old source of comfort most women pass on to others- something they learned when they were kids,
"When a boy hits you or calls you ugly, he's not being mean. He actually likes you."
This is where the problem lies. While the protagonist waits for a boy to call her and she complains to her girlfriends that he isn't, well meaning friends often say,
"oh he's probably just busy."
or
"Jane's husband didn't call her until two weeks after their first date."
While the entire audience laughed at the character's illogical way of thinking, I couldn't help thinking that if we were not the third party looking into the situation, we probably do the exact same thing. We read too much into one-liners or offhand comments and blow up a simple gesture into an elaborate tale of romance.
And as much as your friends have pure intentions to give you words of 'comfort', placing a false hope into someone is the worst thing a friend can do.
My roommate once told me,
"I think he likes you. He just doesn't realize it yet."
And that was the worst thing she could have told me. On one hand we feed off these comments in the hopes that friendly advice can be willed into truth. But more than often we tend to take those words too seriously. I wanted to close that door of hope because I knew hoping in someone else was wrong. Yet I felt like the door was still being wedged open by little comments like that despite all well intentions and 'encouragement'.
Watching the movie made me realize the foolishness of this world; in all the wisdom and advice and self help books, it is all foolishness because we all only know in part.
Other than that it was a cute movie. Justin Long is pretty good. lol
