I was speaking to a seamstress yesterday and she asked me if I was taking design after seeing some of my sketches. I answered no but I liked to do it for fun. I can't go into fashion because I don't know how to sew well (after being traumatized as a little kid). She told me that all the high end fashion designers only know the basics because if you knew how to sew all the intricate stuff... you'd know how time consuming and labourious it would be and it would probably handicap and shortchange your creativity as a designer because all you're thinking is "Oh I should do this because it would take too much work".
So now I'm thinking: should I go into fashion? I know behind all those glamorous magazine spreads is a lot of hard work. Designers make only two collections a year which means that your clothes either make or break with the consumers.. plus with such high prices, there are only a small number of elitists who would be able to afford them. And also there are so many designers out there that's it's very hard to be on top and stay on top. What I don't like about the industry is that all the clothes are centered around the future trends. You have to take trend analysis and predict what would be the next 'It' thing for the following season... I mean how dull is that... yes everyone has their own interpretation of a leather jacket but if it all comes down to making money.. where's the satisfaction in that? I don't know... And I'd imagine there would be a lot of catty and obnoxious people out there.... so that's what's putting me off... I think I'd rather be a photographer or something than a designer.. iono..
I was reading in this magazine today about the hazards of tanning beds and I just think girls are retarded... they say "yeah I know how bad it can be for my skin but I'm only in there for 20 minutes plus I am young! I can take it. And I look so much more sophisticated with a glow. It's like a teenager's rite of passage". And I'm just thinking "you are such total idiots.. I'd laugh at you five years from now when you've contracted melanoma: the deadliest skin cancer". By the age of 18, your skin would have taken 80% of the total damage in your lifetime. I mean is it really worth that transient orange 'glow'. Is it worth the underlayer of wrinkles, the sunspots, the cancer and all the other side effects? I seriously think they're stupid. I'd rather tan under the sun where I'd get warnings of when my skin is burning so I know when to find shade than lying in some bed thinking that my skin is coping just fine. Oh the things we do to feed our vanity.
